ADVICE

Timetable and deadlines     [return to top-level ADVICE]

The first term of appointment as Instructor is ordinarily ~2 years and ends 30 June.

You may be REAPPOINTED as Instructor without a change in rank for up to two 1-year terms.  Contact your department or section office for the exact timetable.

You may be PROMOTED to assistant professor SOM as soon as you meet the expectations for promotion. This need not coincide with the end of a term as Instructor.  Your department/section will tell you when materials are due.

Criteria for reappointment in a nutshell         [return to top-level ADVICE]
  • Complete and official statement is at Official Statement of Requirements | Guidelines | Criteria
  • Sufficient quality and productivity in the performance of your clinical duties, meeting the expectations of your 'job description'
  • Sufficient quality and productivity in contributions to our educational mission and institutional citizenship, meeting the expectations of your 'job description'
  • Other contributions that establish you as 'on track' for timely promotion.  See Promotion in a nutshell below.  These typically include scholarly activity that is commensurate with your job description.
  • A thorough and explicit career development plan that will suffice for promotion in due course.

Obviously the above are mainly judgments made by your departmental faculty colleagues, for whom your chair or chief is the spokesperson.  For that reason you should meet regularly with your chair, chief, departmental go-to person, and/or mentor(s) for insight into your progress and career advice.

There is no obligation to reappoint Instructors, even if they are making satisfactory progress.

  • You were originally appointed as Instructor because you were highly likely to obtain a specific credential, accomplishment, or assurance necessary for appointment as assistant professor.  Valid circumstances might include (a) obtaining a credential (e.g., Board certification), (b) completing subspecialty training, (c) successful competition for significant funding such as NIH R or K awards, among others. The goal should have been specified in the letter you signed to accept your position.  When you achieve this goal, you ordinarily become eligible for promotion to assistant professor.
